Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer are crucial to improving treatment outcomes. Experts from Guangzhou R&F Hospital International Cancer Hospital introduced to us in detail the various diagnostic methods of breast cancer.

Common inspection methods

  • Ultrasound imaging examination: This examination can clearly show the shape and boundaries of breast tissue, accurately determine the presence of tumors, as well as the size, shape and nature of the tumor (cystic or solid), providing a reliable basis for distinguishing whether the tumor is benign or malignant. If a breast lump is found during self-examination, ultrasound examination may be a priority.

  • Biopsy: In the diagnostic process of breast cancer, a clear diagnosis is the prerequisite for treatment. There are many examination methods available nowadays, but only the pathological results obtained from biopsy can be used as the gold standard for diagnosis. Biopsy includes different methods such as needle aspiration biopsy, incision biopsy and excision biopsy.

  • CT examination: CT examination has many important functions. It can accurately locate breast lesions before sectioning, help determine the preoperative staging of breast cancer, and check whether the posterior breast, axilla and internal mammary lymph nodes are enlarged, providing strong support for the formulation of scientific and reasonable treatment plans. For patients who have breast pain but cannot feel a lump, CT scans can help further confirm the condition.

  • Thermal imaging examination: Thermal imaging examination mainly uses images to show the distribution of body surface temperature. Because cancer cells proliferate rapidly, the number of blood vessels will increase, which in turn increases the surface temperature of the tumor. Accordingly, the surface temperature of the tumor will be higher than that of the surrounding normal tissue. By capturing this temperature difference, it can help diagnose breast cancer.

  • Tumor marker examination: During the process of cell canceration, tumor cells will produce and secrete some substances. These substances will be directly released into the cell tissue components and exist in the tumor cells or host body fluids in the form of antigens, enzymes, hormones or metabolites. They are collectively called tumor markers. Common examination items include carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), ferritin, monoclonal antibodies, etc.
