He is good at the diagnosis and treatment of complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases and surgical treatment of portal hypertension. The role of anti-hepatitis B virus treatment in the comprehensive treatment of liver cancer was advocated earlier in the country. He was the first in the country to advocate and promote precise venous interruption surgery for portal hypertension.
In 2005, the first living donor liver transplant was successfully performed in Guangdong Province; he was the first in Guangdong Province to perform difficult surgeries such as combined vascular resection and reconstruction for hilar cholangiocarcinoma and pancreatic cancer, and resection of central giant liver cancer without blocking liver blood flow; the surgical resection rates of hilar cholangiocarcinoma, pancreatic cancer, and giant liver cancer have reached the international advanced level; he has presided over many topics including the National Natural Science Foundation, Guangdong Natural Science Foundation, and Guangdong Science and Technology Plan Project.
In 1997 and 2003, he won the third prize of Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Award. He has published nearly 30 SCI papers as the first author or corresponding author in high-impact international journals such as Hepatology, Clin Cancer Res, Oncotarget, Cancer Lett, Ann Surg, and Br J Cancer, as well as more than 200 articles in Chinese core journals.
