Finding the "silent killer": A complete guide to diagnosing prostate cancer | Early detection means more chances of survival

Prostate cancer is known as the "silent killer of men's health", and 60% of patients have missed the best treatment period when they are diagnosed. Rather than passively waiting for symptoms, it is better to proactively crack the diagnostic code - we have compiled the four most commonly used "detection keys" in clinical practice to help you understand how doctors lock on to the lesions.

1.Blood test (PSA)

  • Draw venous blood to test for prostate-specific antigen

  • Normal value: <4ng/mL (abnormal increase requires alertness)

  • Characteristics: The most commonly used method for early screening, with an accuracy rate of about 80%

2.Digital rectal examination (DRE)

  • The doctor touches the prostate through the rectum

  • Can detect surface nodules, but cannot detect tiny lesions

  • Recommendation: Combined with PSA examination every year

3.Puncture biopsy

  • Prostate tissue samples are taken under B-ultrasound guidance

  • Gold standard for diagnosis, accuracy > 95%

  • Note: Anticoagulant drugs should be discontinued for 3-5 days before the test.

4.Imaging tests

MRI: Accurately determine the location/size of the tumor (recommended first choice)

CT: Evaluate lymph node metastasis

Bone scan: to detect early bone metastasis (90% of prostate cancer is prone to metastasis to bones)

️Important reminder:

  • MRI/CT should be performed before puncture to avoid affecting the accuracy of staging

  • Bone scans can detect asymptomatic bone metastases 6-12 months in advance

Screening recommendations

  • Men over 50: Annual PSA + digital rectal examination

  • High-risk groups (family history/BRCA mutation): Start screening at age 40

  • If PSA>10ng/mL or finger test is abnormal, immediate puncture is required
